There will be people who claim to love you, who will hurt you.

When you ask for help from someone you love, they might say you’re the problem.

There will be people who ignore one thousand injustices directed your way, only to nitpick your every mistake.

There will be people so mired in the dysfunction of victimhood that they will try to exercise uninvited and unqualified judgment on you.

There will be people who claim to be your ally who will watch passively as you strain against the wind, and regard you with a jealous gaze when you succeed. They resent and envy your success.

My experience tells me these things. But there’s more.

There will be people who know instinctively how to make you feel loved.

There will be people who give because it’s in their nature.

There will be people you’re allowed to communicate with, and will communicate in-kind.

There will be people who listen when you talk, smile when you’re nice, and say “thank you,” when you give a compliment.

My hope tells me those things, and I haven’t given up on finding out whether they’re true.
